The Florida Standards database is built to be the foundation of several other modules and systems. Two main systems are being built and will integrate with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards database.

Course Code Directory (CCD)

Florida Department of Education - Course Code Directory
The Course Code Directory (CCD) will be built on top of the Standards Database to replace the current legacy system that was adopted in the 1970’s. This process will not only modernize and simplify the use and administration of the CCD but also will provide richer and additional information. The major elements of the CCD will be:

  • For the district administrators:
    • The new CCD will be accessible online instead of Hummingbird. The online interface will be a searchable database that facilitates finding specific information.
    • The courses will be tied to the educator certifications and eliminate the confusion in the 3 code versus 4 code certificate numbers.
    • The use of codes and symbols will be eliminated making it easier and more efficient for the users.
    • There will be several flat files instead of one. These flat files will be in tabular format and accessible via the web. The flat files will be automatically generated and live at all times. The flat files will include the course numbers, titles, certifications (using the same code as office of certifications, graduation requirements, benchmarks, subject area graduation codes, etc...
    • The new CCD will allow districts to submit electronic course requests for new courses using a course builder tool. The course builder will allow attaching the appropriate standards and certifications to the course request. Course requests will be reviewed and approved electronically with live monitoring of the individual requests.
    • Users will be able to lookup each certificate and the courses that can be taught with it.
    • A booklet of all courses will be automatically generated and will be available in Microsoft Word and print formats.

  • For the Educator:
    • Educators will be able to access the CCD using an online interface and search for information.
    • Educators will see the benchmarks that need to be taught in the course along with the other course information.
    • Benchmarks will be dynamically linked to the benchmark page were resources/example and resources will be listed.
    • Educators will be able to search what courses can be taught with the certifications they have.
    • The CCD will use plain language and no symbols and code.

The Course Code Directory is scheduled for completion on 12/31/2008. Some of these features will become available on this website by 8/30/2008. You can visit the current CCD website at: http://www.fldoe.org/articulation/CCD

CPALMS - Educator Resources and Portal
CPALMS (Curriculum Planning and Learning Management System) will be a unique educator portal application built around Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. The project is funded by the Florida PROMiSE project, and developed by FCR-STEM at FSU.  CPALMS has a team of Math and Science specialists and experts to search for and align resources to the Next Generation Standards in Mathematics and Science. Starting mid 2008 and for a period of three years, these specialists and experts will align existing resources to individual benchmarks. A rigorous review process has been established to ensure the high quality of the resources and their alignment to the benchmarks. Resources will include but not be limited to: lesson plans, video files, documents, URLs, audio clips, presentations, etc. These resources will be collected by Florida teachers for the Florida teachers. Eventually, teachers from all over the state will be given the opportunity to contribute original lessons to the teacher resource database for review, feedback and sharing through the portal and standards database.

CPALMS will be an educator portal that allows personalization based on interests, position and courses taught. Imagine a teacher quickly creates a “homepage” that will display each time s/he opens his/her internet browser and will list resources relevant to benchmarks they plan to teach without another click of the mouse. CPALMS and teacher resources will provide the teacher with the ability to create the homepage on their browser, select the course(s) they are or will be teaching plus any they are interested in and resources will be automatically pulled in based on the established relationship between the Course Code Directory, standards and resources. CPALMS will also provide tools such as an interactive lesson and unit planning tools that allow the teacher to add, adopt or modify for their course(s). After the teacher inputs the date s/he intends to teach a particular benchmark, the tool will automatically show just-in-time course/benchmark related resources on the first screen each time s/he opens the browser. As more resources are added to the system, teachers will automatically be notified of the resources that are of help for their courses and interests.

In addition to resources, CPALMS will list professional development activities that will only show on the homepage when it is relevant to your settings. For example, a workshop targeted for all Math teachers in Leon County will show for all Math teachers within Leon and surrounding areas. With one click, the teacher will register for the event and download it to their calendar. The portal will also remind the teacher about the event and provide him/her with driving directions from their school to the event’s location. Users will be able to rate resources and contribute others to share building a professional network for Florida's educators.

CPALMS will include other gadgets such as calendar, to do list, etc... and will be built as an open platform that allows districts to add additional tools to their teachers. Districts will also be able to load resources and plans using CPALMS tools exclusively for their teachers.

The theme of CPALMS' development phase is: Let's Build it Together! For that reason, we are building a website that will be launched in the near future and will allow your participation with suggestions you have or helping us determine the importance of things we identified to be included. CPALMS will be FREE to use for all the educators in Florida.

More information is coming soon.
