    • Title:
Fun with Fractions: Investigating Equivalent Fractions with Relationship Rods

      Resource ID: 1157
      URL: http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L543
      Resource Description:
Students investigate the length model by working with relationship rods to find equivalent fractions and identify fractions in lowest terms. Students develop skills in reasoning and problem solving as they explain how two fractions are equivalent (the same length).  Lesson 4 of a five lesson unit.  This is a progression from Lesson 3.

Instructional Component Type(s): Lesson Plan (Primary Type), Worksheet, Virtual Manipulative
Keywords: fraction, equivalent fractions, lowest terms, compare fractions, whole, part
      Intended Audience: Educators, Students
Suggested Technology: Computer for Presenter, Internet Connection, LCD Projector, Overhead Projector
      Public Remarks: By Author/Submitter
Assessment of prior knowledge and use of the relationship rods is based on a review of the previous lesson in this unit, Lesson 3.

Challenging and exceeds Content Limits by including a denominator of 15 and introducing lowest terms.

Teachers could use an overhead projector or the applet on a LCD projector with a computer connected to the internet.
