      URL: http://www.beaconlearningcenter.com/lessons/4529.htm
Resource Description: Students investigate different ways numbers can be expressed as a sum and use a chart to record and analyze their findings. The use of children's literature, hands-on manipulatives, and the Internet are incorporated.
Instructional Component Type(s): Lesson Plan (Primary Type), Worksheet, Virtual Manipulative, Educational Game
      Keywords: sum, addition, addend, chart
      Intended Audience: Educators, Students
Suggested Technology: Computers for Students, Internet Connection
      Public Remarks: By Author/Submitter
      Book reference:
Elinor Pinczes. One Hundred Hungry Ants. Houghton, 1993, ISBN 0-295-63116-5

      Additional optional book to use:
Stuart Murphy. The Best Vacation Ever. Harper Collins, 1997, ISBA 0-06-026767-4

      Modifications:
You may want to consider the following modifications of the lesson:

          1.  If possible, each student should get the chance to complete the computer activity.  The partner could record the number of problems solved correctly.  Pairs of students could add up their numbers of correctly solved problems and compare their result with the other pair of students.
          2.  You may want to reduce the group size in the group activity (step 4 of instructions) from 4 students in order to involve all students into doing the math.

      One to One Correspondence Differentiation

For students who are in need of simplification or to differentiate the lesson to just focus on one to one correspondence, use the laminated pants cards and place wipe off marker "ant spots" on the legs of the laminated card and then allow the student to "match" the correct number of ant counters  to the wipe off marker "ant spots" on the laminated card. Count the dots on the pants aloud with the student (either verbally, using a voice output device programmed to count the desired number, or have a verbal peer count for student), count the ant manipulatives to insure that both numbers are the same. This will also reinforce the idea of one to one correspondence, in that each ant manipulative has a corresponding spot to call home. Once the student has correctly matched the ant manipulatives to the dots on the pants count the ants again to make sure he/she was correct and to have an opportunity to count and add each leg of ants together. Wipe off spots and start again with another combination of numbers adding to whatever sum student is working on.
