      Creating, Describing, and Analyzing Patterns

      Resource ID: 267
      URL: http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?id=U71
Resource Description: In this cluster of 4 activities, students use interactive math applets to learn about repeating and growing patterns. In the first part, students use an interactive square-pattern grid to create, describe, and analyze repeating patterns based on a two-square pattern unit. In the second part, repeating patterns with pattern units of three, four, and five squares are investigated. In Part 3, students use an interactive cube-sequencing applet to analyze repeating patterns of colored cubes. In Part 4, growing patterns of colored cubes are created, described, and analyzed, and compared to repeating patterns.
Instructional Component Type(s): Worksheet, Virtual Manipulative, Teaching Idea (Primary Type)
Keywords: pattern, repeating pattern, growing pattern, analyze pattern, create pattern, describe pattern, extend pattern, recognize pattern, predict pattern,
      Intended Audience: Educators, Students
Suggested Technology: Computer for Presenter, Computers for Students, Internet Connection, LCD Projector
      Public Remarks: By Author/Submitter
These activities are intended as supplementary activities for students' mastery of the benchmarks, not stand alone lessons.
