Math and Science Day 2010: Severe Weather and Emergency Preparedness
Ms. Tacher, M.ed.
SC.912.E.7.8 Access Points. Describe ways human beings protect themselves from hazardous weather and sun exposure
Math and Science Day was also the first day of our Sun Safety Week at school where we implemented the Sun Smart Curriculum. Morning announcements talked about the weather, UV rays and we saw a video about sun protection. We read books about our skin and being sun smart, and made a poster about protecting ourselves when in the sun. We pretended to rub on sunblock, wore sunglasses at school and our hats to protect ourselves from the sun. Our art project for the day involved dressing a picture of ourselves with things we need to be safe in the sun – adding a hat, sunglasses and lip balm and sunblock to our pictures. Math and Science Day was great fun and a great lesson since we learned that heat exposure kills more people than the other hazardous weather (hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.) that we previously studied in the year.
