Math and Science Day 2010: Severe Weather and Emergency Preparedness
When I told the children about Math and Science Day, they were very excited. We brainstormed different ideas about severe weather and how the class might prepare for it. We talked about the need for an animal shelter in the neighborhood to protect the animals in case of a severe storm. The class decided that they would like to make a video about building a shelter to protect the animals from "Hurricane Ken". I think the fact that our Principal is Ken Miesner, might have influenced their decision making!
We discussed building the shelter and the materials that might be needed. I told the class that before the shelter could be constructed, they would have to find the area-in square yards, feet, and inches, in case the materials were only sold in those units.
All the members of the class worked together. In this basic education class of 22 students, I have six ESE students, and an additional 8 students with PMPs in math. Using manipulatives is a part of my everyday curriculum.
